Although you probably had to buy your mattress and box spring separate from the headboard, if you purchased a bed frame for your bed chances are the frame came with a headboard as well. Sometimes this is not the case, and at times you may wish to buy a nicer headboard for a frame that you already have.
When looking for a headboard, it is imperative that you take accurate measurements. This is to ensure that the bed fits snuggly against the headboard; if it is not a good fit, then you will undoubtedly be disappointed with its appearance. First, diligently measure the width and the length of the bed frame. Once you have those measurements, then measure the height of the bed (including the mattress in the frame).
Next, measure the size of the room. Take a moment to step back and evaluate what size, color, and style of headboard would be most appropriate for your bedroom. If you are not sure what color headboard you would like, consider the following:
A light colored headboard will not enhance the features of your bedroom if your room has a lot of dark, dramatic colors. It will stand out, but it will stand out only as being a rather ill-fitting piece of furniture in an otherwise beautiful room.
A dark colored headboard will make a light colored room suddenly feel depressing, or the starkness of the contrast will most likely be unappealing.
Remember, you want your bedroom to be a place of refuge and relaxation. When selecting a headboard, you will want to find one that generally matches the rest of the predominant furniture in the room, like any dressers, closet doors, bed frames, chairs, etc.
If you have a rather large bedroom, fitting in any sort of headboard is bound to be a simple task. If you have a large room with a small bed, think about getting a headboard with a shelving unit, or a taller headboard to make the bed appear larger.
If you have a small bedroom but want or need a larger headboard, consider getting a wrought iron headboard as opposed to a hefty wooden one. You might also consider purchasing a headboard that has a painting or some sort of tapestry on it. This can also be quite complimentary to the style of the room.
It is very important that the headboard be installed correctly; otherwise you may be rudely awakened when the headboard falls on you. The bolts should be tightened securely. If the headboard did not come with the bed frame, you must ensure that the size of the bolt is appropriate. If the hole for the bolt’s head that you have is too large, then you can use a washer to help minimize the size of the hole.
